Bastard Cabbage

Rapistrum rugosum

TL;DR: Hillside of lettuce

I was taking a hike through the Barton Creek area today when I came across an entire hillside full of bastard cabbage. The leaves were broad, healthy, and plentiful as a result of the wet and misty weather we’ve been experiencing. I swear, it was like walking past the produce display when the misters are on—you know what I’m saying?

Further research tells me that it originates from Europe and has spread into the contiguous U.S. via the coastal cities. Notable nutrients include vitamin C, antioxidants, and the usual minerals associated with leafy greens. I’ll wait until after the next big rainfall to harvest a sample.

I’m consistently amazed by the degree to which increasing my botanical knowledge changes my experience in nature.
